California Proprietary Security Officer (PSO) Training

New Proprietary Security Officers: The Proprietary Security Officer training is the basic security license issued by the California Bureau of Security & Investigative Services. PSO training is the first step new guards must complete in order to submit their application to the State of California. While PSO license allows applicants to work as an unarmed security officer for a single in-house employer.

The first 8 hours (Powers to Arrest & Use of Force) must be completed in person, in a classroom setting, with an instructor physically present, at an authorized training facility. AEGIS does not currently offer live initial Powers to Arrest & Use of Force. This program is intended to complete Mandatory Core Courses as well as provide a Powers to Arrest & Use of Force Refresher.

Step 1: After completing live Powers to Arrest & Use of Force training, all Californa PSO applicants are required to:
  • Obtain a Live Scan DOJ/FBI background check by a certified Live Scan operator : https://oag.ca.gov/fingerprints/locations
  • Apply for California Bureau of Security and Investigations Guard Card Online: https://www.bsis.ca.gov/licenses.shtml
  • Pay the BSIS registration fees online.
Step 2: All Security Officers are required to complete an additional 8 hours of core training within the first 180 days. This includes:
  • Public Relations
  • Communication and its Significance
  • FREE BONUS: First Aid/CPR Review
Step 3: All Security Officers are required to complete an annual 8 hour refresher. Our bundle includes:

  • Introduction to Alarm Panel Monitoring

  • A/ Powers to Arrest & Use of Force Refresher PSO

    This comprehensive course comprises 15 modules that cover all aspects of the Powers to Arrest and Use of Force Refresher and its implications within the security guard profession and the BSIS exam that will get you compliant with yearly training!

  • Active Shooter Response PSO

    Provides essential information to prepare for and respond in the event of an active shooter or similar type of attack

  • Authority to Question PSO

    This module teaches security guards how to effectively question suspects, conduct inspections, and de-escalate tense situations. It covers their authority, key questioning techniques, and strategies for maintaining control in stressful or hostile environments.

    This module provides essential training on effective communication tools in security operations. Participants will learn about different types of radios, proper radio etiquette, standardized codes, common jargon, and phone usage to enhance coordination and response efficiency.

    This module is specifically designed to train participants on the acceptable responses and communication techniques related to the use of force.

  • Criminal & Civil Liability PSO

    Provides the participant with the knowledge to identify the difference between personal civil liability, criminal liability, and employer liability

  • Factors to Consider Before Making an Arrest PSO

    This module helps participants understand what constitutes an arrest and how security guards might legally affect one if necessary. It covers the definition of an arrest, the differences between misdemeanors and felonies, and proper handcuffing techniques.

  • Gender Sensitivity Awareness

    This Gender Sensitivity Awareness module trains participants to recognize and respond to gender sensitivity issues. You'll learn respectful communication, appropriate use of pronouns, and inclusive practices. It's a key step toward creating respectful and inclusive environments

  • Intro to Internal Communications

    Objectives:

    This course is designed to train the participant to understand internal communications strategies to ensure they communicate clearly and consistently with their team.

    This module is designed to train the participant to understand the legal standards for use of force. The course will teach the participant to: 
    Understand legal standards for use of force and their implications.
    Recognize the legally required duty to intercede.
    Understand how to recognize implicit and explicit bias.
    Recognize and understand the elements of cultural competency

  • Making an Arrest PSO

    This module trains participants on proper arrest procedures, including restraint techniques, less-than-lethal tools, and conducting searches after arrests. It also covers the Merchant Privilege Rule and its implications in security settings.

    This module is designed to define and help the participant understand what Objectively Reasonable Force is and in which situations force should be applied or avoided.

  • Report Writing PSO

    In this module, participants will learn how to write clear and effective incident reports, gather and document evidence, and use photo and video in reporting. The course also covers techniques to foster positive relationships with law enforcement, ensuring accurate communication and collaboration during investigations.

    Provides the participant with the tools to properly write incident reports as well as to build a good relationship with law enforcement

    Provides the participant identify and understand the role of a security officer and their restrictions

    This module provides essential guidelines for identifying and responding to suspicious mail or packages. Participants will learn how to develop and implement Emergency Action Plans (EAPs) to ensure safety in potential threat situations.

    Provides the participant with the definition of terrorism, the types and the stages of a terrorism attack
