Liability for School Security
Security professionals working in educational environments must understand how legal liability affects their responsibilities both on and off campus. Knowing when a school has a duty to supervise students, how state laws apply to student conduct, and how case law influences security practices helps guards make informed decisions while protecting students, staff, and school communities.
This module provides participants with practical knowledge of the legal principles governing liability in educational settings. Participants will learn when schools may be held responsible for incidents occurring on or off campus, how California Education Codes address student conduct beyond school grounds, how case law impacts security responsibilities, and the importance of following established reporting procedures during school-related incidents.
Topics covered in this module include:
- Off-Campus Liability
- On-Campus Liability and Case Law (San Francisco v. Peterson)
- E.C. 48900 – Student Conduct Off-Campus (Portal to Portal)
- E.C. 44808 – Liability of Students Off-Campus
By the end of this module, participants will be better prepared to recognize liability issues, apply California laws and school policies appropriately, document incidents accurately, and respond professionally to situations affecting campus safety and student supervision.
